CPAP replacement guidelines

To get the best results from therapy, it is very important to ensure that your patients replace their equipment according to the recommended schedule. The replacement schedules shown on this page are based on CMS guidelines.

Mask Replacement

Full face cushions

Over time and use, the silicone on the cushion can become worn, damaged or unable to be cleaned thoroughly.

When: Replace as often as every month, depending on condition.

Nasal cushion and nasal pillow

Over time and use, the silicone on the cushion can become worn, damaged or unable to be cleaned thoroughly.

When: Replace as often as twice a month, depending on condition.

Headgear

Over time and use, headgear may become stretched and lose elasticity, leading to over-tightening and discomfort.

When: Replace as often as every 6 months, depending on condition.

Oral nasal mask cushions

Over time and use, the silicone on the cushions can become worn, damaged or unable to be cleaned thoroughly.

When: Replace both oral and nasal pillows cushions as often as twice a month, depending on condition.

Devices & tubing replacement

Disposable filter

If the environment is particularly humid or dusty, then the disposable filter won’t last as long. Visual inspection is the key to determining disposable filter life.

When: As often as twice a month depending on condition

CPAP device

The typical life span of a CPAP device is 5 to 7 years. We highly recommend getting a backup CPAP machine especially if your current machine is more than a couple of years old. That way you’ll never be without a CPAP machine, even when one of yours stops working.

When: Every 5 years

Tubing

For maximum comfort we recommend replacing your tubing regularly.

When: As often as every 3 months depending on condition

Humidifier Replacement

Humidifier water tub

Humidifier water chambers may become discolored, cracked, cloudy or even pitted due to the mineral levels found in most tap and drinking water. As the material deteriorates, cracks may trap bacteria from moisture.

When: As often as every 6 months depending on condition

Heated humidifier

You’ll know your humidifier is broken when the heater plate no longer heats up. For humidifiers with variable heat settings the different heat settings might have no effect.

When: Every 5 years
